Petrology and Economic Geology - دانشکده زمین شناسی
Petrology and Economic Geology Department
The Petrology and Economic Geology fields encompass a broad range of science disciplines and applications to igneous and metamorphic petrology, environmental geology, and mineral resources endeavors. PEG students at UT develop and apply new tools and sophisticated instruments, and geological fieldwork in challenging settings. Faculty and students are addressing fundamental questions about our world in an unparalleled research environment, from Mineral resources and metallogeny, ore-forming processes, and geological processes to understanding environmental problems.
Economic geology is a branch of geology that discusses the conditions under which minerals are formed, their morphology, texture, and structure, along with ore-forming systems' physical and chemical controlling factors. The economic geologist is responsible for justifying the economic value of deposits and the genetic classification of minerals.
Also, the role of petrologists is not far from economic geologists, and these two trends together play a significant role in the exploration and exploitation of mines.
The School of Geology, located in the College of Science at the University of Tehran, trains such students.
The overall aim of our faculty is to provide talented students with a comprehensive introduction to the scientific study of ore mineralization and petrography.
Practical courses try to follow the content of the class closely, and students are expected to become familiar with the microscopic and macroscopic properties of minerals and ores.
Master:
By the end of master courses, students are expected to have:
- Proficiency in working with software such as ArcGIS and ENVI.
- An understanding of the socio-economic drivers for mining and exploration activities.
- Accurate knowledge and ability to interpret different genetic models associated with each mineralization class, emphasizing mineralogy, petrology, and geochemical controlling factors on Iran's mineral resources as well as world-class deposits.
- To identify the critical ore-forming minerals in hand specimen and thin section.
- Understand the role of a geologist in the mining and exploration industries.
Successful graduate students can apply for positions in exploration and mining companies or continue their studies in various doctoral programs in geology.
Ph.D.
A Ph.D. graduate is expected to have the following abilities as well:
In addition to all of the above, Ph.D. graduates are expected to play a therapeutic role in science production.
